What it does

Smile4Real is an Android app for people struggling with mental illness. It offers activities — split into indoor and outdoor suggestions, each with its own imagery — along with motivational quotes and cat and dog pictures. And it puts a direct link to a suicide helpline in reach for the moments someone needs it most.

The content ships with the app rather than being fetched: the quotes, the cat photos and the dog photos are all bundled as local assets. For a weekend build aimed at someone having a bad day, that is the right trade — the app works with no signal and no API to fall over.

Four people, none of whom had written an Android app

Built with Ahmed Hamodi, Jay Dhulia and Markus Samuel. It was the whole team's first Android project, and the honest version of the story is that getting Android Studio set up took three hours before anyone wrote a line of app code.

That detail is worth keeping rather than sanding off. Shipping something that placed second out of more than a hundred teams, on an unfamiliar toolchain, in a weekend, on no sleep, is a more useful signal than a polished project built with tools you already knew.
